Project Description

Sulphur Creek Nature Center is a wildlife education and rehabilitation facility that showcases local wildlife, houses a discovery center, offers educational programs, operates a wildlife hospital, provides volunteer opportunities, and hosts activities fostering a connection between people and nature.

Based off the 2021 community led Master Plan, select features of the grounds at 1801 D Street amid the Hayward Hills have been enhanced including:

  • outdoor education area with rustic shade structure
  • amphitheater from reclaimed trees
  • interpretive and wayfinding signage
  • welcome kiosk sign and map
  • updated seating between the aviaries and bridge
  • pollinator garden

Construction is complete and the park is open to the public.

To fund the improvements the District secured an Outdoor Environmental Education Facility (OEEF) grant in 2018 from the California State Department of Parks and Recreation for $499,998.  On 7/7/2023 the HARD Foundation received a generous $100,000 contribution from the Fremont Bank Foundation, and on 8/29/23, Ann Pendleton made an individual donation totaling $10,000. Additionally, the HARD Foundation Golf Tournament fundraiser contributed $37,000. In total non-Bond funding reached $646,998.
