Project Description

In 2019, HARD agreed to collaborate with Resource for Community Development (RCD) Housing, Berkeley, CA. In conjunction with their development of 79 affordable housing units in a 5-story facility, at East 14th Street and 162th Ave., RCD built a new community center and daycare facility.

Providing an amenity for the entire Ashland area, RCD built a new 12,300 square foot community center, immediately fronting onto East 14th Street. The design plan for the community center has the following spaces: 4 multi-purpose rooms, a fitness/exercise/dance studio, a Pre-K Classroom for up to 24 students with attached outdoor play area, administrative offices, and a lobby/gathering area facing onto East 14th Street. The designs were confirmed in late 2021 and construction began in May 2023. Completed in June 2025, the new Ashland Roots Center opened to the public.

This stylish new building was designed by Kava Massih Architects of Berkeley. A final embellishment to HARD’s newest community center is the creation of unique artwork for the front glazing facing toward East 14th Street. A window mural was designed by artist Emily Fromm. A vinyl application on the window glazing, the design for this 120-foot mural is inspired by the vibrant, diverse surrounding neighborhood, and the exciting activities provided by HARD in the new Ashland Roots Center. The process in selecting and creating the artwork was completed in conjunction with the Office of the Alameda County Arts Commission.

This is the one of three adjoining acquisitions for the Ashland area, along with adjoining property fronting onto East 14th St. and fronting onto nearby Mateo St. as well. Both of these will become a new neighborhood park.
