The District has partnered with Alameda County and the Trust for Public Land to plan and develop a new community park and plaza designed to serve the needs of the Ashland community.
The Ashland Zócalo project was awarded a $7.3 million grant through the California Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Program (Proposition 68 – State of California Parks & Water Bond of 2018). This program funds the creation of new parks and recreational opportunities in underserved communities.
The project included the design and construction of recreational improvements on a one-acre site at the corner of 166th Avenue and East 14th Street in San Leandro. A series of community meetings held in spring 2019 helped shape a community-driven design for the park.
The final master plan features a flexible community space with a multipurpose lawn, play areas, a fitness court, an interactive fountain, shade trees, seating, picnic areas, and restrooms. The site also includes a dedicated space for public safety officers and is designed to support active community use through an outdoor stage for live entertainment, an open-air market structure for commercial activity, flexible event space, pop-up markets, and accommodations for food trucks and mobile services.
Construction was completed in July 2024.
